Following is a prayer/writing from each speaker focusing on
the Saint they will present
Prayer of St. Francis:
Lord make Me an instrument of
Your peace.
Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness joy.
O Divine master grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console.
To be understood, as to understand. To be loved. as
to love.
For it is in giving that we receive; it is in
pardoning that we are pardoned.
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal
life. Amen
Frederic Ozanam
Jesus Holy Friend, Let me imitate
you so that others may imitate me. May
our whole life be spent under the patronage of our Lord to whom we have
consecrated our life.
“Many will praise his understanding; it will never be blotted
out. His memory will not disappear, and
his name will live through all generations.
Nations will speak of his wisdom, and the congregation will proclaim his
praise.” (Sirach 39:9-10)
These words of sacred scripture grace the tomb of Frederic
Ozanam, which is located in the crypt of the church of Saint Joseph-des-Cannes,
adjacent to the famous Institut Catholique in Paris.
Frederic Ozanam was one of the most celebrated professors at
the Sorbonne, the University of Paris, where a lecture hall has been dedicated
to his memory. His doctoral
dissertation, “Dante and Catholic Philosophy in the 13th Century”
helped direct scholarly thinking on the Italian poet. He is considered an indispensable authority
on the history of literature, on Catholicism and on Italy.
He had many academic accomplishments, but perhaps his
greatest accomplishment would be the founding of the Society of Saint Vincent
De Paul. In April of 1833, at the age of
20 while a student at the Sorbonne, he and six other students founded the
Conference of Charity, the name was officially changed to the St. Vincent de
Paul Society in 1835. People on every
continent have joined he society and put into action the dual commandment of
love for God and our neighbor mandated by Jesus.
